Digital transformation that sticks: a practical approach

Six practical considerations for connecting process changes, software delivery and user adoption.

Useful software depends on more than features. Process design, ownership, training and technical quality all influence whether a new system becomes part of everyday work.

1. Fix the process before you digitise it

Map the workflow, including exceptions and handoffs, before configuring a system. Simplifying unnecessary steps can reduce implementation complexity.

2. Start where the pain is loudest

Listen to the people doing the work and compare candidate improvements by impact, risk and feasibility. Address a meaningful operational problem rather than starting with a preferred technology.

3. Ship value in the first quarter

Identify a useful first release with clear success criteria. Choose a delivery window that fits the complexity and dependencies, and review evidence before funding the next phase.

4. Name the owner

Assign a business owner and clear technical responsibilities. Agree who prioritises changes, supports users and evaluates whether the system is delivering value.

5. Train for the job, not the software

People don't want to learn the system; they want to do their job. Training built around real tasks ('how to process a customer order') can make adoption more practical than a feature tour alone.

6. Measure and say so

Publish the numbers: hours saved, errors down, revenue up. Public metrics protect budgets, reward champions and make the next phase an easier sell.

Adoption is designed, not hoped for. If the plan has no adoption workstream, it isn't a plan — it's a purchase order.
